A new Spider-Man movie may still be two years away, but the film’s creative team is sharing some details about our favorite web-slinger. Today’s episode of Clevver News Feed is brought to you by T-Mobile. With new films arriving in theaters, the writers and director of the upcoming Spider-Man reboot are opening up about the film’s direction. Along with word that Tom Holland would be our new “Peter Parker” came the announcement that Jon Watts would be helming the 2017 Spider-Man movie that would see the world’s most lucrative comic book character joining the ranks of the Marvel Cinematic Universe. Watts had previously directed the Eli Roth horror film Clown and most recently the Sundance darling Cop Car starring Kevin Bacon that will debut in theaters on August 7th. While speaking with Entertainment Weekly, Watts revealed that Marvel got a chance to see Cop Car and that allowed him the chance to pitch the idea for his version of Spider-Man. Regarding the casting of Tom Holland as “Peter Parker”, Watts explained that he can be a real high school student and play a grounded and relatable superhero, which Spider-Man is. He is also able to do a standing back-flip, which will likely come in handy too. As for working with the other Marvel filmmakers, most notably Joe and Anthony Russo who are currently shooting next year’s Captain America: Civil War where the new Spider-Man will first be introduced, Watts said they are still in the early stages, but says he will be working closely with everyone in order to make sure there is continuity between the films and that everything fits together. In addition to the new Spider-Man movie director, we’re also hearing from the film’s writers, John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein. The pair are set to launch their first directorial debut this week, Vacation, which they also wrote. In an interview with Deadline, the duo revealed that the fact that they had just written and directed a film based on a classic John Hughes comedy and that Marvel’s Kevin Feige was looking to quote, “draw on the spirit of John Hughes for this Spider-Man” helped land them the job. As far as their approach to the film, they were attracted to the idea of approaching it from the standpoint of a high school geek who doesn’t become a superhero right away, so don’t expect to see Spider-Man save the world by the second act. He’s a real kid with real issues who must learn to use his new powers in a responsible way, but there will also be a wish fulfillment element to the film. In a separate interview with NPR, Daley and Goldstein explained that Peter is a sharp and witty kid who deals with the fact that he’s a geek and outcast through humor saying quote, “It is sort of the safety net for geeks like us, so I think we can totally relate to where he's coming from." We’ll have to wait and see how it all plays out when Spider-Man arrives in theaters on July 28th, 2017, but what do you think of the direction of the film so far and are Watts, Daley and Goldstein the right team to put it all together?
