Spider veins are twisted red, purple, and blue vessels seen typically on legs and face. This vein abnormality is similar to varicose veins.
The only difference is that varicose veins are larger, raised and swollen blood vessels with twists and turns whereas spider veins are smaller. Both of these are caused by structural abnormalities of blood vessels. Spider veins are also called telangiectasias. They can be understood as clusters of tiny blood vessels close to the surface of the skin of an adult person.
Some of the factors that contribute to weakening the valves in the blood vessels that ultimately results in spider veins are: heredity – the condition is usually passed on through genes; age – individuals above 50 years of age are more susceptible, as the valves in the veins become weak over time; hormonal changes due to pregnancy, menstruation, menopause, hormone replacement therapy or taking birth control pills; standing or sitting for long hours; history of blood clots.
One of the most effective home remedies against spider veins is cabbage. Cabbage is loaded with a number of nutritious components, such as vitamin A, B1, B2, C, E, K, magnesium, potassium, iron, calcium, phosphorus, sulfur, copper, and fiber.
Take some cabbage leaves and wash them thoroughly. Chop them finely by adding water, to make a paste. Apply this on the spider veins and wrap up with a clean cloth. Allow it to stand for 2 hours and then wash it off. Repeat the process 2 to 3 times a day.
Or else, rinse a large cabbage leaf thoroughly and remove the rigid midrib from it. Straighten the leaf and place it over the affected area. Leave it on, till it gets completely dried. Repeat the procedure, until you get relief.
