Each year spiders eat an estimated 400 to 800 million metric tons of prey. A new study published online on Tuesday on The Science of Nature's website compiled data from 65 previous studies to determine the number of spiders in existence in the world and how much they consume. One of the study's researchers said, "We hope that these estimates and their significant magnitude raise public awareness and increase the level of appreciation for the important global role of spiders in terrestrial food webs."
