I have discovered an easy way to get your cuttings to grow roots before you plant in a pot. Merely push the cuttings through a hole in a polystyrene tray and float the tray in a container of water. As the tray is floating on the water, the base of the cutting will always be in the water. The cutting will not dry out and this will encourage the roots to grow.
Of course, the spider plant had the little roots to begin with, which made it easy to develop roots. Also spider plants are very easy to grow...
