Garden Spiders Mating

Dislike 0 Published on 17 Dec 2010

Commonly known as the Yellow Garden Spider or Writing Spider this Argiope and her mate are in a dance for life. The tiny male must tap out the correct rhythm to seduce the female into a mating ritual. A wrong signal and he will be her next dinner. Starting with a strum on the web and proceeding to tap out rhythm on her body the male Argiope is ensuring the continuation of the species. If successful the female will soon begin to lay over 1000 eggs in a silk cocoon covered with a hard shell to protect it from predators and the weather. In a few months the spiderlings will emerge and start the whole process over again. What an amazing opportunity to observe this very critical stage of their life cycle.
