Scarlet Snake Feeding On An Egg

Dislike 0 Published on 19 Jun 2012

This is a Scarlet snake and was found near Wilmington, NC. It's colors mimic those of the Coral snake and the Scarlet Kingsnake, but it has a white belly. Scarlet snakes are extremely hard to keep in captivity because their main diet is other reptile's eggs. After spending 3 hours digging up all the landscaping mulch in my yard I finally found some eggs. At first he just rolled them around for a while and then finally started in on the biggest one. I'm not going to keep this snake due to his diet, but wanted to see if I could get him to feed. I did spend a lot of time researching Scarlets and all I found were sad stories about a snake that lasted a couple of months and then died. So it's an awesome snake to see, but not one to try and keep.
