Ball Python Feeding Fail

Dislike 0 Published on 10 Aug 2015

Benjamin Ball is a pastel ivory ball python. Approx 6 months old. There's a couple reasons as to why he was being such a derp;
1) he just woke up
2) he could feel the heat coming from the warm side of his terrarium, and in his sleepy state confused that heat with the heat of his dinner
3) he relies on his sense of smell just as much as his eyes, and before we gave him his food it was defrosting on that side of the room.

This silliness isn't that unexpected from BP's, they are notoriously fussy eaters and we are actually very lucky that he's never turned down a meal for us. He's a very good, healthy, boy.
Ben eats large frozen/thawed mice, and no, for the people who are still confused, he is not blind.

For the people who are insisting that feeding him in the same terrarium he lives is "dangerous" for us: it's not. If he were an aggressive snake? A different species? Yes. But he isn't. He's a ball python. If you've ever had your snake strike at you you've either provoked it or you haven't washed you hands. Go wash your hands.

To those insisting it's "better" to feed any snake live food: It isn't. Here's the benefits of feeding your snake live prey: ...... there aren't any. Here's the RISKS of feeding your snake live prey: All rodents have teeth and claws, they WANT to live, they WILL fight back and they CAN kill your snake. A simple scratch can be all it takes to cause serious infection leading to death. If they scratch or bite at your snakes eyes it'll blind it. If your snake doesn't feel like eating (which is extremely common for ball pythons) and you leave the rodent in the cage it'll can eat your snake. Would you seriously take that risk? It is also unnecessary cruelty for the rodents. Why would you put them through all the pain and fear of being hunted when they can be killed humanely and then safely be fed to your snake as a f/t meal.

The only time it actually makes any sense to feed a snake live meals is if that snake is on a hunger strike (again, common for BP's) and that's the ONLY way that it'll eat.

Finally, telling me to kill my pet because of your weird illogical fear makes you one hell of a douchebag.
