Eating Snake in the Philippines - Asian Exotic Food

Asian food - I don't dare call snake a Filipino food. I do not think it is a common dish here, at least not in my area. I always specify 'not in my area' because withing the Philippines the cultural aspects of various areas are extremely diversified.

Snake is more commonly consumed in Taiwan, China, Vietnam, Thailand, Indonesia, and Cambodia where sometime they even drink the blood mixed with alcohol. The resulting blood and alcohol concoction supposedly has aphrodisiacal properties. Considering the mix of foreigners specially Asian in the Philippines it is not surprising snakes are sometimes made available as food. Snakes are sometimes found in the open markets. I have been told snake is also on some of the more exotic restaurant's menus.

Personally, I kind of like snakes specially large ones and I would not have killed or butchered one myself. I have had rattle snake in the USA and this was similar in taste. The rattle snakes in the the USA I did prepare myself. They were taken from an area where they were harmful to people and animals in the surrounding community. The big diff - I have never eaten rattle snake adobo style. I have only eaten it grilled in the past. The rattler snake I have eaten was much smaller and not as tough as this would have been grilled. Myra told me this larger snake would be very tough grilled and I probably wouldn't like it After eating it, I would have to agree. Even after being boiled, the grilled snake was a bit tough.

I believe it is probably to satisfy some of the other Asian cultures living here.
