Eastern Hognose Snake - Georgian Bay

Dislike 0 Published on 30 Jul 2010

The Eastern Hognose Snake prefers to feed on toads and can often be found in sandy areas. In Ontario, its range covers southern parts of the province, from Lake Huron to Lake Erie and north along the shores of the Georgian Bay and inland towards Peterborough. It is said to be relatively common, but uncommonly encountered. This is my third. It was found near a small beach south of Parry Sound.
The defensive display is remarkable. It coils up, flattens its hood, hisses loudly, and in this case, opens its mouth quite wide. In some cases, of course, it will feign death. This particular snake did not entertain us with such an act.
Footage was captured on the Canon T2i with a 50mm lens. A wee bit shaky. Sorry.
