It's spring and it looks like this group is celebrating a long and cold winter coming to an end.
Truthfully it is mating season and what you see here is 1 female swarmed by several males. When it gets warm enough males will emerge from their winter dens and get ready to mate with the first female that attracts them with a pheromone she produces. This can attract up to 20 or more males all competing for the female.
After all this excitement and copulation the female will find a secluded safe place to give birth to to a few snakes. That means anywhere from 3 or 4 to upwards of 80 baby snakes.
Hopefully that safe secluded place isn't in the foundation of your home.
