Red-sided Garter Snake - breeding ball

One of the rare gems you can find in Manitoba is the Narcisse Snake Dens - every spring and fall, the red-sided garter snake amasses in dens in the limestone bedrock. Spring, they emerge as the ground warms, and they conglomerate to mate before dispersing across the landscape for the summer.

We made it for the tail end of their emergence, but there were still hundreds of snakes in each of the pit/dens! It was really fascinating. They're non-venomous as well, and fairly docile (though they were getting hyper active through the day, as it was nearing 30 C) - so you can catch them and hold them with ease.
