As a deadly Rattlesnake injecting venom into it's prey, killing a large rat, consuming within seconds. Eating it's prey from the initial strike, to the end of the tail, all within 6 1/2 minutes. UmmUmm. A beautiful desert creature rarely seen on the roads and byways of the Southwest by day. Only coming out of it's den to either feed, defaecate, or shed it's skin, the Great White Shark of the Southwestern Desert and to the arid climate it thrives.
Habits include;
Staying in the same den all Summer, typically forming a group during the Winter months for warmth during extreme cold, as any creature would. Typically grouping up by late August, coming out of it's den by March-April, becoming active seeking food and water. These animals require far less water as other animals and reptiles, eating previously killed rodents, their blood acts for this purpose. A large rat once digested, and expelled is about the size of a quarter, 1 mo. later, bones and all. Amazing how the rattlesnakes leave nothing for waste, utilizing every last drop of energy for it's survival.
Receives an additional rattle each time it molts or sheds it's skin. Skin is made up of large scales, smaller ones closer to the head, larger ones in the mid section, back to smaller ones near the tail. Growing to lengths recorded to as long as 9'-11", which is the largest recorded venomous snake in North America. Previous to the find, the Eastern Diamondback growing recorded lengths of 8' long are common. What they say, "Everything is Bigger in Texas" holds true for this also.
Rattlesnake, Western Diamondback, Latin term Crotalus atrox, sometimes referred to as "Ring-tailed" species a prolific nocturnal native to the Southwest desert of the United States. Getting it's hatred being the most aggressive venomous snake in North America, which eats rodents from mice to Jack Rabbits, and is a vital part of our Eco System. Creatures who feed on these reptiles are the Red-Tailed Hawk, Coyote, Fox and Bob Cat.
Killing these reptiles from so called and popular Rattle Snake Round-ups are senseless slaughter of a reptile which never wishes to come in contact with any human. Pouring gasoline into cracks and borrows, driving these snakes out, gasping for air, snakes are bagged, and killed for the rattles, skin, head, fangs, key-chains and are rarely consumed as food. The senseless slaughter is making this snake species all but extinct in Sweetwater, Abilene, Okeene, Tioga, Evans areas of our country. Feeding dollars into the community coffers from large gatherings, one day the Rattlesnakes will be no longer. Shrinking in size, Sweetwater TX. once had Rattlers up to 6' long. Now, your lucky to find one 2 1/2' - 3'.
Rattlesnake as a Pet;
Raising Ms. Gadsden from a neonate 8" long, growing over 5', having her as a pet for 4 years. Released her back into the wild in the Summer of 2010 just outside of Lake Meredith State Park North of Amarillo.
A pet not recommended having, unless
1) You are very familiar with venomous snakes
2) Have proper handling tools, such as Kavalar Gloves, hook, tongs, bag, and snake bite kit.
3) You provide a fool-proof cage for the safety for both you, family and your snake. Any accidental escape would be catastrophic, not to mention the possibility of being injected. If any accidental escape happened, home & neighborhood would have to be quarantined which could the cost could run into the thousands, generally home owners insurance would not cover this, and potential of never renewing policy. I was fortunate having experienced this desert creature up close for over 4 years, studying the habits, and characteristics of this timid, shy, deadly reptile, changing the way I view it, now protecting and encouraging their existence here on our Green Earth.
