Here's what happens when you try to feed birds. The rats are the first ones to get to the food on the ground. Usually there are squirrels eating the sun flower seeds mixed in the bird seed. However, since the rats appeared, the squirrels stay away. The birds and rats seem to be "nervous" when both are present. To add to the food chain, cats are drawn to the bird feeder so they can catch a pre-occupied bird. Blue Jays seem to be the most feared. Once I walked near a tree in my yard and a Blue Jay attacked me and pecked me on the head, Luckily the bird hit my ponytail. But it still hurt. Note to self: wear a hat outside!
