This is a video of a Carpenter Shop medium rat proof chicken feeder in use. The feeder costs $65.00 plus shipping. For more info visit our website at http://ratproofchickenfeeder.net/
It is constructed using galvanized sheet metal in 29, 26, and 24 gauge. The treadle bar is 3/-4" x 1/8" mild steel, and it is assembled using punch locks, pop rivets, and sheet metal screws. Light weight, durable, and it will not trap a chicken's head like the other rat resistant feeders.
And it will stop rats, mice, chipmunks, squirrels, and wild birds from stealing your expensive chicken feed thanks to the spring loaded door and the narrow treadle step that is set back far enough that even a heavy rat can't reach the feed if he is big enough to trip the treadle.
For a product like this to be affordable the materials need to be exactly right; not too heavy as to run the cost up but heavy enough to be durable. Light enough to keep the shipping costs down yet durable enough to last for many years in the harsh environment of a chicken coop.
The design needs to be nearly fool proof because a feeder that allows you to leave your birds unattended for a two week vacation can not jamb or fail. It must be designed so that it can't kill a bird if the bird is eating while another bird is on the treadle. This feeder isn't designed for commercial flocks where losing a few each month to the feeder is just an operating expense; usually these backyard birds are pets as well as producing eggs and fertilizer for the garden.
