BIG Thailand Rat Snake - Identification Tips

Dislike 0 Published on 25 Jul 2016

Thailand has some BIG SNAKES. The Keeled Rat Snake - Ptyas carinatus, is the biggest Rat Snake Thailand has. This snake can reach lengths of over 3 meters long! I saw a huge one in the rainforest as I was running in Krabi one afternoon and it was massive! I thought for sure it was a king cobra - so I didn't grab the tail when I had a chance, I wanted to look at it more to judge what it was. By the time I realized it was a huge rat snake - I could no longer grab the tail! That sucked, but still it was an amazing experience to see such a majestic snake up on the mountain. Would make a big meal for a large king cobra!

Thailand has about half a dozen rat snakes: Ptyas fusca; Ptyas korros; Ptyas carinata; Ptyas mucosa; Ptyas nigromarginata; Gonyosoma oxycephalum; Coelognathus radiata; Orthriophis taeniurus; Gonyosoma prasina; Oreocryptophis porphyraceus. And there is one that was just found in the north, that was only just discovered in Thailand this or last year (Ptyas nigromarginata).

Rat snakes are very helpful for the environment. They are rat and rodent eaters primarily, and they really can eat a steady diet of the beasts. Don't kill rat snakes or your rodent population will increase.
