How I got rid of Roof Rats

Dislike 0 Published on 31 Mar 2019

I had some roof rats in my shed and wanted to get rid of them when they started eating my grass seed. I tried some humane traps, but they didn't work. I had to use rodenticide to get rid of them. It took one week for the rats to die and they died where I couldn't reach them. Shed smelled bad for about two weeks. Make sure you patch up the holes where they entered your property to prevent more from arriving.

***UPDATE 4.19.19
So I found a smaller rat today stuck on the snap trap. Looks like the poison killed the Big rat but the smaller one didn't eat the poison, maybe the food balls were too big. I also think the snap trap did not work the first time because the rats had lots of food (the bags of seed) to eat so they were not attracted to the nutella in the trap. The trap works as long as you remove any sources of food for the rats.

***Update 9.20.19
My neighbors neglected their backyard and that's where the rats were coming from. Neighbors moved out so the rats were coming into my shed through a new hole, looking for a new home. The snap trap was reliable, I caught 4 rats in a week. Then, i found the trap moved from its place without food, but no rat..two times. So I figured it was a small rat and it wasn't heavy enough to set off the trap. I mixed the nutella with crushed poison balls and caught the lil dude in two days.

***Update 10-4-19
Rats are gone, they were easy to catch with nutella because they are heavy enough to set off the trap. But I saw a lil mouse walking around the trap one day. The mouse didn't want the nutella. So I crushed the poison (meat based scent) and mixed it with the nutella and caught the mouse on the trap.

***Update 5.1.20
I now leave the trap set with crushed poison and nutella. That catches the large rats and the lil mice that are too light to set off the trap. Recently I noticed some food (posion with nutella) was gone but no rodent on the trap. A week later it smelled like a dead rat, the poison got him.

TIPS:
1. Before setting out traps and/or poison, clear out all sources of food so they can starve and want to eat the peanut butter/nutella off the snap trap.
2. Nutella alone may not always work, mix some crushed poison balls with nutella for best results.
3. Patch any holes to prevent more rats from coming in.
4. If using poison, you can break it into smaller pieces so the smaller mice can eat too.
5. Wear gloves when cleaning up to avoid contact with diseases the rats may have carried.
6. Throw away any items that have rat poop and rat urine as they can carry diseases.

Rodenticide is dangerous around your pets and children, so keep it away from them!
