FAQ
Q. Where do you get your hammocks?
A. Ebay or Etsy mostly!
Q. Where do you buy your rats food?
A. I buy science selective rat from Amazon or Ebay. I buy them lots of goodies from Rat Rations.com and they share our veg that we buy anyway.
Q. How stinky are they?
A. They can get a bit stinky if they need a good clean out, but having grown up with dogs and cats I think they can be equally smelly. Rats clean themselves constantly so you don't need to bathe them often.
Q. Can they be litter trained?
A. Yes! Some more successfully than others though. Our boys use their litter tray but there's also a few spots around the cage they still poop in.
Q. Are they expensive pets to keep?
Nope. At least I don't think so. A huge bag of litter lasts ages. Big bags of science selective rat lasts us a while too! Darwin's medicine is under £20. Louis castration was £70. Other things like cleaning products last a while and aren't too costly. If you have a chewer you might go through hammocks often, but again they're not THAT pricey.
Q. Are they difficult to care for?
A. Not particularly. They feel like a pretty low maintenance pet to me, but the cleaning can take quite a while. I do a quick clean every day just to keep the cage from getting too grubby too fast. Deep cleans take me over an hour (I think), though that could just be because I'm slow.
