Dirty Bunny Butt

Oh no! My angora's bum is covered in stinky poo! Whatever shall I do?

I trim bums so they can clean themselves, but sometimes it still gets out of hand. Here is how to trim a dirty bunny bum.

This is what is called Intermittent Soft Cecotropes, which is usually diet related. In this case it was likely due to lettuce, which none of them get anymore. This can happen to ANY rabbit if their diet is too high in carbs or sugar treats, so please check your bunny's bum especially if you have kids who like to hand out goodies. Also check their hocks as this sticky poo can get ground into the bottom of their feet.
Here is information from House Rabbit Society on dealing with ISC if it becomes an issue.

If this only happens rarely (as in Skittles' case here) it's nothing to worry about, but if it happens a lot, it may be worth taking your rabbit to the vet to check for parasites, or adjusting their diet as indicated in the link above.
Note that this is NOT diarrhea; that is rare in rabbits and can be fatal if not treated. If your rabbit has diarrhea take them to the vet now-now.

Yes, I cleaned her up, my battery died before I was done.
Yes, I used scissors. Know where your rabbit is and what their anatomy looks like before you do that, and always cut at an angle away from their skin.
Yes, I clean the rabbit house weekly (sometimes daily), except for the mirror because boy bunnies want to murder the rabbit in the reflection and I don't like being sprayed, but it helps reflect light.

If you need to use a damp cloth, please dry your rabbit thoroughly. Like dry-dry, not just damp-dry. Wet fur can cause problems even for short haired rabbits, and it's a disaster for woolly rabbits.

Note: in the video I say I check them twice a week, but I groom twice a week and check daily, because this is just not OK to leave on them.
