Maintaining A Healthy Diet For your Rabbit (Baby/Adult)

Dislike 0 Published on 1 Jun 2015

In this video, I'll be explaining the correct diet for a rabbit (from weaned to adult age). Although a rabbit's diet is relatively easy once you get the hang of it, it can be hard at first, especially the transition from different hay and introducing vegetables in their diet. In this video, I try to explain their diet as simply as possible. Most of these facts came from the House Rabbit Society, although I did use several other resources as well, which will be listed. Feel free to screen shot any scenes in this video for later references; their diet will be listed down here as well.

Baby Rabbits (7 weeks- 7 months):
Unlimited pellets (alfalfa pellets are recommended, but if they are unavailable, timothy pellets will do fine). Unlimited alfalfa hay. Start slowly introducing vegetables at 12 months.

Young adult rabbits( 7 months- 1 year):
Decease alfalfa hay, increase timothy hay. Decrease pellets to 1/2 cup per 6lbs of body weight (start deceasing alfalfa pellets and increasing timothy pellets, if necessary). Start increase daily vegetables gradually, but only what your rabbit can tolerate. Occasional fruit, no more than 2 oz. per 6 lbs. body weight.

Adult rabbits (1 year+)
Unlimited timothy hay. 1/4 to 1/2 cup pellets per 6 lbs. body weight (depending on the rabbit). 2 cups vegetables per 6 lbs. body weight (according to a different resource, 1 packed cup per 2 lbs of body weight, which ever is best for your rabbit, but generally around that amount). Occasional fruit, no more than 2 oz. per 6 lbs. body weight.

I hope this video helped you maintain a healthy diet for your rabbit! Remember, it's never too late to start! Even your rabbit is already grown and you have never done this, this is the healthier option for feeding and you can start! Just start out slowly, and increase the amount over time.
