Rabbits
There are estimated to be around 1.2 million rabbits kept as pets in the UK [PDSA Animal Wellbeing Report 2015].
There are many different breeds and varieties of rabbit, varying in size, body shape and personality. Typically, they live for 8-12 years, but some may live for longer.
In 2015 alone, we rescued 4,600 rabbits. We have hundreds of rabbits who are all looking for new homes. Take a look at our find a pet page to see all the rabbits available for rehoming.
Understanding rabbits' needs
The biology and behaviour of pet rabbits is very similar to that of wild rabbits. This means they have very complex needs.
There's no one ‘perfect’ way to care for all rabbits because every rabbit and every situation is different. It is up to you how you look after your rabbit, but you must take reasonable steps to ensure that you meet all his/her needs.

Rabbits have an unusual digestive system
Food is passed through their gut and special droppings, called caecotrophs, are produced. Rabbits eat these caecotrophs, allowing the food to be re-ingested. Ensure your rabbit's digestive system is kept in tip-top condition by providing a healthy diet.
