Brushing Long Haired Rabbit

Brushing long haired rabbits can be a big challenge for owners since their coat needs an often and special maintenance.
Long hairs can easily get matted so it’s important to brush your rabbit constantly. You should brush your bunny at least once a week, but sometimes (during shedding) even several times a week/every day. If you want your rabbit to have a healthy, shiny and good fur, you have to take care of his coat regularly.
Many rabbits don’t love brushing and won’t stand patiently, so it would be best if you could have someone who would hold your bunny in place while you brush. Either way, you should always be gentle and patient.
The easiest way to take care of the long fur is to trim it and keep it short. Keeping long fur short also lowers the possibility of your bunny ingesting too much fur and getting a stomach blockage. This can particularly happen during the shedding time. It is because of too many hairs that stay in bunnies’ fur, and they can ingest it when they clean themselves.
You can use regular scissors to cut your bunny’s fur. Some owners prefer plucking rabbit’s fur before brushing, because it removes the dead fur and makes grooming easier. If you encounter matted fur the best option is to cut it off.
When you take care of the long haired rabbit, you also have to get used to seeing their fur constantly on your clothes and furniture.
For brushing we use a metal comb with 2 different needle density endings and a small cat brush. Pigi’s fur is long and woolly, especially his winter coat. It gets matted easily sometimes, particularly around his bottom and back legs, so we cut those parts off.
