The experiment has run its course. It has been 5 months, but we now have our answer.

Raising rabbits "Free Range" is not something will will try again in the near future.

We believe that a parasite, like a worm, infected them and caused them to die.

We never really saw the end of the female rabbits - they just stopped showing up.

Of the males, however, one was found really torn up, as though it had been in a bad fight. We decided to put it down. About a week later the other male was very complacent, allowing Jennifer to pick him up. However, he seemed to have no control over his rear half, as if he had a neurological problem. We put him down as well.

So, for what it is worth, we cannot recommend this method - at least not with the same setup we are using. Perhaps if you medicated. Perhaps if you had a large fully fenced yard... but fully free-range did not work for us... at least not on this try.
