Pot Belly Pigs - Tips on Caring For Your Pot Belly Pig
Pot belly pigs are becoming increasingly popular pets. Lots of people are looking for something a little more unusual in a pet, and pot belly pigs certainly fit the bill!
Its important to do your research though. Taking care of a pot belly pig is not the same as taking care of a cat or dog, but they do make great pets if you know what youre doing. To help you, here are a few tips on taking care of your pig.
Pot Belly Pigs - How To Care For Them
When you tell people that you have a pig as a pet one of their first questions is always What about the smell? But the truth is that, even when your pig spends much of its time in the house - taking good care of him will mean that there are no problematic smells hanging around. As with any pet, though, if you dont care for it properly then smells can start to accumulate.
Pot bellied pigs need plenty of space so make sure your house is big enough before purchasing one. Keeping one in a space too small is cruel and can cause health problems, so please dont be tempted to buy a pig if you live in a small place.
Another thing which should put you off buying a pot belly pig is if you will have little time to spend with it. Like dogs, pigs are social animals (and theyre as intelligent as dogs too) so if youre out at work all day every day theyre going to get bored and suffer. Without getting enough attention your pig may even become aggressive, which will take quite a bit of retraining to sort out.
Pigs often live well into their teenage years, so getting one is a long-term commitment. It is important to think through all the aspects of looking after a pig before going out and buying one. Dont enter such a lengthy commitment on impulse!
As with any pet, proper nutrition is important for the care of your pig. As theyre still somewhat unusual pets, you cant just pop down to the supermarket and buy a tin of pig food! However, ensuring your pig gets the right diet does not need to be difficult. A low-fat diet high in vegetables is a good start, and with a little more research you can create the perfect diet for your new pot belly pig.
