Minnesota veterinarian Dr. Ross Kiehne specializes in caring for pig herds and training pig farmers on caring for their animals. Dr. Kiehne explains the design of the farrowing barn where mom sows live for about three weeks while delivering and nursing their piglets, protected from the elements and from territorial barn-mates. The pens are designed so the piglets are also kept comfortable and well-protected. Dr. Kiehne demonstrates how he treats animals that get sick and explains the withdrawal process in place to ensure animal medicines do not enter the food chain.
