Perdido Key Beach Mice Ear Notching

Today's #SavingSpecies segment focuses on some tiny mice with a HUGE ecosystem impact. Three male additions to our Perdido Key Beach Mice (PKBM) family had their ears notched. What's ear notching, you ask? It's similar to having your ears pierced. Tiny samples are taken from the ear and those genetics are analyzed to ensure that a healthy breeding population is maintained. Part of our mission is to not only help protect species in the wild, but to also participate in reintroduction programs for species in peril of extinction. Beach mice are crucial to the health of dune ecosystems, which is why Palm Beach Zoo is working hard to ensure that these little wonders are around for future generations.
