Scientists at the San Diego Zoo have bred in captivity Pacific pocket mice, and released them into the Laguna Coast Wilderness. In decades past, human development -- subdivisions, shopping malls and even century-old cattle ranches and farms -- pushed the pocket mouse to the brink of extinction. But in recent years, human intervention, through a four-year-old captive breeding program at the San Diego Zoo, has pulled it back from that brink.
