IGUANAS! MEET DESI'S AWESOME LIZARDS! (Iguana care and feeding)

Dislike 0 Published on 14 May 2018

Green Iguanas are unquestionably a favorite lizard with herpers and have been for decades. While in south Florida I hung out with Desiree Hereu Dou, and helped her feed and clean all the iguanas under her care. You’ll see why these are such awesome and popular lizards, and why Desi is really the queen of lizards!

Green iguanas Care Tips
Green iguanas can found naturally from Mexico to South America. They are reptiles that spend most of their lives in trees. Iguanas are herbivores, eating mostly leaves, flowers, and fruit.
Enclosures
A large and tall cage that is at least 8′ x 3′ x 6′. Bigger is always better so go with the largest cage possible.
Sturdy branches, ledges, ramps, and perches.
A wooden box that can be used as a hide area.
UVB fluorescent bulbs. Long bulbs that can cover large areas with light work well.
A basking light or heat emitter to maintain a habitat temperature around 85* F.
Thermostats to monitor the temperature of your pet’s cage.
Substrate for the bottom of the cage. Eco-earth, reptile carpet, newspapers, and paper towels can all be adequate substrates.
A food bowl and a couple of water bowls. The bowls should be heavy or able to be attached to something to prevent spilling.
A water tub and/or spray bottle for adding humidity to your iguana’s habitat.
Food & Supplements
Greens and vegetables for the primary diet of your pet. Some of these are collard, mustard & dandelion greens, turnip greens, kale, shredded carrots, peas, green beans, bell peppers, and squash.
Fruits like strawberries, blueberries, bananas, apples, and cantaloupe to add variety to your pet’s diet.
Commercial iguana food that can be mixed with the greens and vegetables.
A calcium & vitamin D3 supplement.
A reptile multivitamin supplement.
