The Mountaineering Teams, Working for Water. The first high altitude alien clearing teams for the Working for Water Program started in the Western Cape. Five men from Villiersdorp Township were trained to live and work in the mountains for weeks at a time, clearing alien invasive timber from water catchment systems around the Western Cape. The project was made possible by the late Kader Asmal, then minister of Water and Forestry Dept.
The team of five men grew to a total of 110 and for five years, eight teams like these worked in the mountains, doing amazing stuff.
I was lucky to be a part of it all.
Here's going back 15 years. People where part of the story - people like Matthew O'Meara, Hennie Niemand, Ross Suter, Dion Tromp, Alex Rose, Jason Mtoko, Leon Leukes, Hein Carolus, Blondie, Mariska Farmer and many more. Blessings wherever you are now.
Here's to the new country we believed in back then (and still do) and the people who helped.
Peace
