Breeding Bearded Dragons

A visual guide to breeding Bearded Dragons. These are my babies that started hatching Aug 29 2008. More Detailed Info: Breeders should be a MINIMUM of 18 months old before you breed. Females can store sperm from just one mating for up to a year so putting the two together is only needed once to get a year's worth of babies. DIET: Females diets should switch from their 80% greens 20% protein to a 50%/50% amount. Dusting with calcium is very important because the eggs will drain the female's body of its calcium so the eggs can develop so be sure to dust her meals daily with calcium and dust with vitamins 3 times a week. DOIN THE DEED: Make sure you supervise your dragons while you have them together to mate. Breeding can often turn too violent where one or both of the dragons may become injured so always keep an eye out. The process of the mating consists of rapid head bobbs from the male and circling the female with the body out flat and slow push-up movements and tail flicks from the female. Eventually the male will get into position and its all done. Only let them mate 1-3 times at most per year. After about 10-15 days (sometimes a little longer) you can feel little marble-like objects in the belly of the female dragon. What you feel are the eggs that are developing. Later on during her pregnancy her belly will sag very low and you can see the eggs almost protruding from her sides and underside. When she is ready to lay she will begin scratching and digging like crazy and that is when you put her in the laybox.
