Happy Tuesday!
What are the benefits of allogrooming with your horse? First off what is allogrooming? This type of grooming can been seen in lots of species like horses, and cats. It's pretty much the act of grooming another individual. It’s seen between (usually) two horses scratching areas on the other horse that's hard to reach by themselves. It's a really important part of bonding in the horse world. There are even studies showing the social effects of allogrooming in feral horse populations, in how the closer a social bond was, the more allogrooming was done. Generally allogrooming is between horses, but sometimes horses include people, like my horse Chanson is doing here.
Many times people stop their horse from “grooming” them back, afraid it can lead to biting. It’s totally personal preference on allowing or not allowing this behavior. I don’t mind it coming from a horse I know well, knowing he’s just giving me affection back from grooming him. What is your opinion of allogrooming behaviors received horses?
