Grooming a horse with a metal curry comb

For the first 55 years of my life I had very little contact with horses. Luckily, in 2011, I had the good fortune to start taking various rides and lessons with Westernaires out of Jefferson County, Colorado. In this recording I was being taught how to groom a horse (in this case, it was "Wyoming," listed as #95 out of a herd over 127 at the time!) with a metal curry comb. The idea is to remove the dirt and other irritants that could become abrasive or painful between the horse's body and saddle.
Okay, although I am brand new at "horsemanship" I have since learned that using a metal curry comb on a horse is, at least, controversial. However, if you examine this video carefully you'll notice that the person instructing me is making every effort to use the curry comb in the gentlest fashion without harm or discomfort to the horse. My guess is that using the curry comb in this manner is no more uncomfortable than what the horse has to endure when accepting a bit, bridle, saddle, or human on their backs. Granted, if given a choice I'm sure horses would prefer not having to endure ANY of these things so my suggestion (as a newbie) is that we use these things lightly, with care, and as infrequently as possible...
