December 6th, 2013, Winter Weather Storm for Texas - Just an update from Texas on the winter cold front that is bringing colder than normal temps to parts.

I put my first water heater in a horse water trough, I am not a fan of electricity, water and horses, but I wanted my horses to have water and in the teens and 20 temps water is freezing. So I went over how I covered the heater plug in and extension cord to protect from water and freezing. I would like to have a GFI circuit or plug, which I will install for next year or if we get a warm spell.

I do not deal with this cold very much, so other viewers in really colder places may have other tips, PLEASE PUT ALL TIPS IN COMMENTS FOR OTHERS.

I am sure I will get hate mail since my horses have ice sickles hanging off them, but if look at the horses they are appear comfortable and have a shelter they could stay under, but THEY CHOOSE to go out into the open weather.

Keeping fresh water, available shelter and free access hay should be enough for most horses. I get emails from people in Alaska, Norway, Canada, Russia and Sweden all say their horses do fine in much more severe cold than this.

The video was cut short since the cold zapped my battery pretty fast filming - I was going to show the green smaller bucket under the shed, I am bringing hot water from the house and pouring it over the ice water, so the horses have two choices of water source.

Buddy and Mr. T - you are good boys.
