Today's handy hint that we're going to show you is hoof oil. We're going to show you a cheap and cost effective horse hoof care technique to make hoof oil for those special occasions and how to make hoof oil, such as shows and presenting your horse. To start, you will need some cheap vegetable oil, any vegetable oil will do & some Stockholm tar that you can get from most saddlerys. Always use protective gloves when you're handling these sorts of products.
You just need to get a little bit of Stockholm tar, add this into the pot and then we just add some vegetable oil, you can make quite a lot from a very small amount of ingredients.
You can make quite a lot of hoof oil from a very small amount of ingredients so it's very cost effective. Before applying the oil you need to clean the horses hooves. Once you have cleaned the horses hooves you can apply the homemade hoof oil. You can use the old hoof oil brush to apply the oil .It's really important to check your horses feet at least twice a day and every time you paint their feet.
What is always a really good idea is to just brush the hoof with a stiff dandy brush before we put any oil on. You should always want to paint the underneath of the horse's hoof first, right up into the cleft, the frog. Be very careful with horses with lighter color hair. And then you would oil around up to the coronet band.
This is a cheap and effective way to paint the horse's hooves and that paint will probably last you all season. So, as you can see, you've got all of this left in your pot, as well as nearly a whole pot of Stockholm tar and vegetable oil is very cheap to buy. So, this will probably last you all year as you're only using it for a show season.
