Empire State: New York Breeding Makes A Brand New Start Of It

When New York’s Thoroughbred Breeding and Development Fund was established in 1973, its goal was to expand the state’s green space by way of creating more horse farms. Take a drive Upstate, and you can see the results of that initiative. Still, the fund's impact on the sport of Thoroughbred racing was muted at best in the ensuing decades, and the economic downturn of a few years ago threatened to destroy the breeding industry altogether. Things have changed dramatically in the last three years, as the Resorts World Casino at Aqueduct has injected the fund with an unprecedented flow of cash.

In this episode of our summer series Empire State, Scott Jagow takes us to the farm to see how that financial transfusion has pumped new life -- and confidence -- into a breeding business that was once a target of derision.
