I should have mentioned that this is not a regular occurrence, only done very rarely if you HAVE to. People have commented that this procedure will make your hamster sick. We did THIS bath as DJ had insisted on always pooping and peeing in his nest area inside the hamster cage. He was covered in his own feces and urine and stank awful.
He has now been moved to a larger bird cage. He is certainly a VERY fit and healthy hamster, and very strong...he has managed to break out by chewing through plastic and bending door stops (and destroying them). After his several complete house breaks we got him the metal cage. Appreciate everyone's concern, and YES, making sure your hamster is always clean, and his nest area cleaned out daily is the BEST way to keep him in tip top shape.
How NOT to give a hamster a bath as shown by Barley Gig. In future we are looking into sand bathing and making sure his nest area is cleaned daily so he WONT need a bath. Parents make sure your child does this or do it yourself! Its not enough to take a cute hairy hammy home from the pet store and expect your child will know how to take proper care of it.
FOOTNOTE
Thanks for asking, sadly DJ passed away last month and we buried him in the back yard. Since making and posting this video and seeing all the complaints he had not one more bath since then (last year). He only had sand baths which he never took to, refusing to clean his crap off. Eventually there was so much muck on him he got an infection and died. He was 2 years old. All i can say now is that his first one and half years of life with monthly baths left him happy and healthy, and when we stopped them he slowly got messed up, sick and died. I'm not blaming anyone here for his demise but maybe some hamsters are different to others you know? This one didnt like the sand..
