NATURAL/GERMAN STYLE HAMSTER CAGE

How Do You Clean A 'German-Style' Cage?
A lot of you are asking this so I will reply here to save time! :)

'German Style' cages come with their own style of cleaning, once a month you remove and replace 1/3 of the dirty substrate with clean substrate them mix everything up together. By doing this you allow the soil (or chosen substrate) to air out and for the clean, untouched soil at the bottom to be brought to the top. The cage is able to stay clean through this 'filter' method because of the amount of substrate used. This method can only be used if you cage has over 6" of substrate. It is a favoured method by many pro-naturals because it reduces the amount of stress that your hamster has to go through, the cage will never lose its territory smell and so your hamsters behaviour is not effected by clean outs, the lower frequency of cleaning (just once a month) also helps to prevent stress and as hamsters have many stress related illnesses this is a very good thing! Finally this way of cleaning is seen as much more economical and is no less clean than a normal cage that is cleaned every two weeks. :) x
