A guinea pig has matted coat and is reluctant to move

A 6-year-old guinea pig is unable to walk. Matted hairs and very weak.

The guinea pig had to be clipped bald as the hairs are all matted. The painful body, hips and knees would be due to the twisting and turning by the guinea pig to groom himself, spraining his back and joints. Hence the painful cries when examined.

After we cleaned up and clipped the guinea pig, there was no more visits by the owner.

Long-coated guinea pigs tend to have matted hairs. The city-dwelling owner needs to brush and groom daily. Otherwise, the guinea pig gets stressed trying to cope with painful movements from entangled hairs and infected skin. The backside is now very dirty and is urine-scalded.

The owner can send the guinea pig to the groomer every 2 months or so for grooming.
