Advice on how to approach and pet your guinea pigs in the cage - follow these tips and you will start to notice your guinea pigs becoming less afraid of you and more tame!
TIP # 1: Approach the cage slowly and let them know you are there, without taking them by surprise.
TIP # 2: Slowly put your hand near them, level with them and to the side so they can see easily. Make sure they can see it coming so you don't take them by surprise!
TIP # 3: Try not to ever chase them around the cage. This might be harder to avoid if you are trying to pick them up!
TIP # 4: Where they are in the cage might affect whether to go ahead and pet them or not. Think about their behaviour and 'escape routes'! Skittish piggies in the centre of the cage are likely to run away, but the same piggies in a more enclosed space may let you pet them
TIP # 5: Try to approach and pet them when they have been sitting in one place for a while, rather than when they are on the move.
TIP # 6: For very skittish piggies, you may try and stroke them briefly when they are in a hidey house/tunnel, to get them used to you before they get more confident.
TIP # 7: Keep an eye on other piggies nearby and be careful not to surprise them!
TIP # 8: Pet/stroke on the head/neck, piggies don't usually like being touched anyway else. Though some pigs like chin strokes!
