WARNING - ICKY STUFF - GUINEA PIGS SHOULD NOT BE KEPT OUTSIDE FOR A REALLY GOOD REASON This is an extremely graphic video - if you are easily grossed out then don't watch!
We have a rather large waiting list for intakes and invite people come and bring their animals when they get to the top of the list. Nikki and Nicolette were brought in a few weeks ago. They had been living in an outdoor hutch for all of their four years. They were right filthy when we examined them with sticky greasy-ish hairs so we decided to give them a good bath first.

As volunteer Gemma got busy giving Nicolette a good wash she noticed little crawly things rinsing off her. Saskia was called in to take a look and we discovered that they were suffering from fly-strike and maggots had made a home inside the folds of her lady parts.

Thankfully that was all they were doing, just living there in those folds. The skin was thankfully intact. So this is what happens in an outside environment. Soiled bedding attracts all kinds of flying bugs, warm weather will make soiled bedding the ideal breeding ground for different types of flies and their eggs that turn into maggots. A guinea pig will sit on the bedding and those bugs are transferred.

This can also happen indoors btw if the cage is extremely dirty and maggots develop in the bedding.
