Guinea Pig Noises & What They Mean

Guinea Pig Sounds and their Meaning:

1)Wheeking
Guinea pigs squeak to tell humans that they would like some food. They often squeak when they hear certain sounds that they connect to food, such as foot steps, the sound of the fridge opening or a bag wrinkling. Once one of your guinea pigs starts squeaking, the others will often follow or will start running around in their cage. Interestingly, this sound only addresses the human.
It translates to „Human, I know you just fed me 20 seconds ago but I still want some snacks“

2) Chutting
Chutting is a relaxing background noise that guinea pigs often make when they’re running around or exploring. It sounds as if they’re talking to themselves. It’s genereally believed to be a happy sound, one that relaxed and content guinea pigs make.
This sound translates to: „I like whatever I’m doing and I’m super happy with myself“

3) rumble strutting
This is a very low sound. It often goes hand in hand with a guinea pig shaking its butt and moving around slowly. This sound is used to show dominance, it’s used by male guinea pigs to get attention from female guinea pigs and it’s used to calm down fighting guinea pigs. Female guinea pigs make that sound as well, for example, when they want to establish themselves as boss or when it’s the time of the month where they could become pregnant. Since it’s also used to establish a rank system and to show who’s boss the sound can also be the beginning of a fight between guinea pigs. Because the sound is used in so many different situations, there isn’t really a translation for it.

4) Purring
Purring is very context depended. Guinea pigs aren’t like cats so a purr doesn’t automatically mean that a guinea pig is happy or content. There’re two, totally opposite, translations for purring. One is: „I like this“ and the other this „I don’t like this, please leave me alone“. When a guinea pig purrs because it likes something you will usually hear this sound when you feed them their favorite veggies, they explore a new hidey or they get to have some floor time. If you pet their but, something which is associated with showing dominance amongst guinea pigs, and you hear this sound, your guinea pig is telling you to back off.

5) teeth - chattering
This sound can be directed at other guinea pigs, at you or at a sound or situation. Your guinea pig is bothered by something and doesn’t like what is happening. It warns other guinea pigs to back off or warns them that a situation might turn out to be dangerous. It can also be a sign of pain. It’s not unusual to hear this sound.

6) Chirping
Unfortunatley; I don’t have an audio clip of one of my guinea pigs chirping but it sounds as if a bird has landed in your cage. The only guinea pig who has ever made that sound is Little One. The sound is extremely rare to hear and it usually means that a guinea pig perceives themselves to be in danger. Perceives themselves to be in danger because guinea pigs get started all the time and don’t make that sound often.
Fun fact: Our domestic guinea pigs almost never make this sound while guinea pigs in the wild produce it more often, and it seems to be some kind of stress relief for them.

7) Complaining
You will probably hear this sound when your guinea pigs eat or sleep. They often make it when another guinea pig sits too close to them or seems to be invading their personal space.

8) One loud squeak sound
Not exactly the same sound that guinea pigs make when they’re squeaking for food. It usually means that they’re in pain, for example if you hurt them while clipping their nails, or when they’re shocked because another guinea pig has bitten them. If you don’t know why your guinea pig might be in pain, you need to see a vet.
