Should You Get Male Or Female Guinea Pigs? | Cavy Care

It's an age-old question -- "Do I get all male guinea pigs, all female guinea pigs, or a mix?" In this episode of Cavy Care we give you a very, very simple guideline for making this decision.

There are some misconceptions regarding single-sex guinea pig groups. Groups of males aren't inherently aggressive or violent towards each other and groups of females aren't inherently relaxed and easygoing. When it comes to single-sex guinea pig groups, it's a really simple choice: pick one and stick with it!

Deciding whether to get a mixed-gender group is also really simple. Are the males or females desexed? If yes, go for it -- one desexed male and several females is often considered the best combination because it's close to how guinea pigs operate in the wild (minus the babies).

If neither the male or female is NOT desexed, the answer is a very, very loud NO. Do not put fertile males and females in the same place. Don't even have them in the same house. There's no guarantee the male(s) won't get to one of the females and result in many guinea pig puppies. Please do not breed guinea pigs. There are so many that live in rescues that need loving homes just waiting to be adopted.
