Snowflake's Foot Spurs (GUINEA PIG HEALTH/MEDICAL/VET CARE)

Dislike 0 Published on 18 Dec 2018

Foot spurs on guinea pigs are relatively common. Although harmless and painless, they are best removed as if they get caught and ripped off, the foot will bleed profusely and leave the guinea pig at high risk of infection. Therefore if you spot foot spurs on your piggy, it's best to nip them in the bud and clip them down short - not down to the skin, as you don't want to open up any skin, but just leaving a millimetre or two on there. Foot spurs are a bit like a callus if you want to compare it to any human ailments...a buildup of hard, dead skin cells, and in the case of guinea pigs that develops as a 'spur' that almost looks like an extra nail on the foot. They almost always occur on the front pads, not on the backs.
