Guinea pig Hair Loss - How to identify and treat fungal and mite mange

Dislike 0 Published on 4 Nov 2014

Many many cases of hairless guinea pigs come to the sanctuary where mites and fungal are a problem. This can be treated. The cases that I have demonstrated here are moderate. By watching this tutorial you will be able to identify mite and fungal issues and also see how to bath and treat the condition.

Mites and fungal always go together. There are 3 different types of mites, but all of them cause eventual hair loss and scratching which then leads to fungal or infection as the piggie wants to scratch and bite for sheer relief. Eventually, this will kill a guinea pig so it is very serious.

In this case, these two guinea pigs were taken at 2 different times to a local vet - who I shall not name and shame here. Skin scrapings were done and they ruled out mites. This is not a reliable method of finding mites as there may not be any show and it certainly does not cover internal mites which also cause this. Regardless the piggies should be treated for both mites and fungal when this situation arises. In a last-ditch attempt the lady contacted me through the Facebook page and brought the piggies over. This is their story. Now fully recovered, I want everyone to be able to recognise and treat these issues before they get to this stage.

If your piggie is worse than these cases - it is imperative that you seek proper cavy advise first as piggies can take fits unless you are extremely careful in their treatment. So if they are worse than these cases, contact a good vet near you or you are welcome to reach me on the Facebook page below before you commence treatment.
