A child's first pet but adult care required for guinea pigs

Guinea pigs need an adult to take a full interest in their care and handling to ensure they are kept well. As children, they don't notice problems and through your involvement, you can help ensure their pets are kept healthy and nothing sinister is lurking.
It is devastating for children to part with their pets and the impact, when it could be avoided is horrible.
You are teaching them to be responsible in so many ways, when you help them care well for their pets.
