Guinea Pig and Dog Sharing Dinner

My guinea pig Pumpkin and dog Mayzie munch on some basil from my garden.

Pumpkin is a 2 year-old female Peruvian breed of guinea pig who was unfortunately purchased at PetCo after 8 months of no luck finding a rescue or rehomeable baby in central Oklahoma. She was adopted as a new companion for my neutered guinea pig Charlie, who had lost his old companion Fudge. Guinea pigs are social animals, so keeping them in pairs is the best for their health and well-being.
Her companion Charlie had recently passed away, he was an 8 year-old neutered male part-silkie breed of guinea pig who was adopted from a guinea pig rescue in Illinois. I spent more time with her and her and my dog hung out a lot more to ease her loneliness.
Mayzie is a 2 year-old female German shorthaired-pointer mix rescued from a physically abusive and neglectful home. She was given away for FREE on facebook, upon which her previous owners hastily deleted their accounts. She is now happily enjoying being the most-loved dog in the world.

As a side note on my pet posts, I often get comments about how much people "want one." I encourage you to read up on the proper care and treatment of all of these critters that you want. A pet is not a fashion accessory, collectible, or spur-of-the-moment item, it is a living thing living thing that requires a commitment of MANY YEARS and needs proper care, housing, nutrition, and most importantly attention. It also has hidden costs such as vet bills and food expenses. It is a big responsibility not to be taken lightly.
As a plea for animal welfare I give you this:
If you love guinea pigs and want one, I encourage you to adopt and rescue pigs (and all of your pets) from shelters and rescues rather than pet stores. Pet stores often support and buy their animals from mass breeders; people who mistreat, abuse, and neglect animals and are only in it for the profit. If the pet you want can't be found in a shelter, then do your best to find a private breeder.
Many major pet stores like PetCo and PetSmart also receive abandoned animals in need of rehoming; unfortunately, and especially around the holidays. In my 9 months or so working at a PetSmart, I witnessed at least 7 various birds, some reptiles, and a rabbit abandoned in front of the store or in the bathroom for the employees to find.
Be sure to ask a pet care representative if they have any animals such as this in the back room in need of homes. Pregnant guinea pigs are an often abandoned lot, especially given to how easily they are missexed, and the original companion I got for my Charlie came from one of these sources. Unfortunately, she was pregnant, which I knew, but it also made her far too aggressive for things to work out. (she beat the crap out of him -_-)
A great place to start looking for pets in need of rescue is Petfinder:

This is the site from which we found and adopted Pumpkin's companion Charlie.
So many animals are homeless and need a place to live, do your part and rescue them.
