There are several benefits of integration of cocoa and goats, including 1. Additional income for farmers, 2. Provide good manure for cocoa, 3. Goat feed is obtained from Gliricidia/Leucaena, cocoa prunings, pod husks. The collection of goat feed also means that cocoa and shade trees are pruned routinely. Therefore, farmers who raise ruminants, especially goats, in the cocoa block do not need to do special pruning of the shade trees, as they regularly cut the branches and leaves to be used for feeds for goats.
Goat manure can be mixed with other wastes, such as leaves, pods husks to make compost in trenches in cocoa blocks with addition of decomposer such as PROMI. This “in situ composting” is very efficient way to make organic fertilizer, as it does not require chopper/shredder machine and no need labor for turning up the compost etc.
