On a recent night out with the Lehigh Valley Writers Symposium I heard a terrific story by Carol B, a middle school teacher of poetry in the local area. She explained how her daughter, who is living in the Middle East, had attended a special banquet by her host which featured freshly killed goat and had been offered the honor of eating the tongue. Although it was not something she ever imagined she would do, she ate it when she learned that local lore held that eating the tongue of a goat would make her a better poet! That gave the teacher an idea, so she looked for a butcher who could supply her with the delicacy. The link below is to a recording of the story of how this ritual became a staple in her 8th grade poetry class.
