Our Little Doe Sugar Bread is in Heat! Do you need to know how to tell if your goat is in heat? In this video we discuss flagging, screaming, and discharge. I forgot to mention color change, so I'll bring that up here. You could expect to see the color of the fleshy area change to a bright pink or red color, and get puffy or swollen. Neither of those things happened with Sugar Bread so I didn't think to mention it. Also, while Sugar Bread is exhibiting the signs of heat, she is by no way large enough to breed yet! She is still a baby. This breed, the Nigerian Dwarfs, are known to be fertile around 7 weeks of age. So you'll actually need to take any baby bucklings away from their Nanny Goat and sisters at 7 weeks old or risk a life threatening pregnancy. As to the exact weight or age of goats, there's been some recent controversy. Some sources claim that 45 pounds for a doe is absolutely ok. A new source said that you should wait until they're 75 or 80 pounds, but this has a lot of Nigerian Dwarf Farmers upset. I don't think any of our goats weigh more than 65 pounds. Most sources say that 2 years of age is the maximum wait on a doe for breeding. There are other ranchers who prefer to wait just over a year. I think from our few years of experience, we will be going by 50-65 pounds, and a year and a half old. I'm leaving the low end open for Starry because she is a petite lady, and I just don't know if she'll ever get to be 65 lbs! But she is also the lady who went into labor too early last time. So if that happens again, we may have to stop breeding her. We'll definitely keep you updated. It does look like Starry was bred the other day when Sharky and the Bucklings got out. I have it on a timer, so in 5 mos, we'll see if there's any new kids. Also, please keep in mind, that with out pre-orders and a deposit, we do not plan on breeding our goats this year. If you would like to purchase baby goats from us, we will need at least 5 months notice, and a $80 security deposit for doelings.
