To meet the growing demand of milk and meat in the province, Livestock Department of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has decided the utilisation of the techniques of artificial insemination on goats. The initiative would help enhance the production of milk and meat of goats.
In these exercises, artificial insemination in goats was practically exhibited. So in future this technology could be delivered at the door steps of the farmers. The training program is still in progress and targets have also been fixed to build heft capacity of the artificial insemination centres for the insemination of goats. Khyber Pakhtunkhwa is the only province, where this facility is available to farmers and for guaranteeing the success of the program and production of goat semen had been started at Harichand Unit, which is available at the rate of only Rs 25.

The first exercise of the artificial insemination was got a breakthrough in April last year and in light of artificial insemination healthy baby goats are born from Saanen and Boen varieties of semen. This new generation of baby goats already available in Livestock Experiment Station Jaba, district Mansehra.

In wake of the present progress, the authorities of Livestock and Dairy Development has decided that in future Pakistan beside good breed of goats would also import Saanen goats for milk and boiler goats for meat. Presently, Semen Production Unit, Harichand has preserved the semen of the local goat breed of beetle and tidy.

According to an estimate, presently Khyber Pakhtunkhwa has near 7 million goats, however, the production of milk and goat is less as compare to its number due to which farmers are not receiving good income and with the introduction of the best breed semen, there are possibilities of maximum increase in the productive capacity of the present goats.
