1) The first one is that Guinea pigs did not come from Guinea, New Guinea, or Guyana
2) Guinea Pigs have 14 toes – 3 in the back and 4 in the front.
3) Guinea pigs rest more than they sleep. Since they’re prey animals they’re always on alert and resting is safer for them than sleeping.
4) Guinea pigs adapt to their human’s routine.
5)The oldest known portrait depicting a guinea pig in Europe was painted around 1580 by an unknown artist and it shows three Elizabethan children, two boys and a girl.
6) In Switzerland and Sweden, it is illegal to sell just one guinea pig,. In fact, many countries now offer a rent-a-guinea pig service.
7) Guinea pigs can rest with their eyes open. Especially if they’re unsure of their surroundings or if they’re not sure about new sounds, they prefer resting to sleeping.
8) They have evolved to avoid predators and prey animals instead of attack them. This is why guinea pigs usually don’t bite their humans but flee. If a guinea pig bites or nibbles, it often confuses the human’s hand with vegetables but it doesn’t bite because it really wants to hurt someone.
9) Guinea pigs have very different names in different languages but they can’t seem to shake off the pig connotation. Their English name means pig from guinea, their German name means little sea pigs and in France they’re called pigs from India. Even its species name, C. porcellus, means "little pig" or piglet in Latin.
